Oak Bay Guest House Innkeepers and Your Hosts
victoria B&B hosts - oak bay
Derek and Egle Vair purchased the Oak Bay Guesthouse in November,
2007. They have family ties to Victoria, and have visited the village
of Oak Bay since 1976. “We always wanted to retire to Vancouver
Island. When the Guesthouse came available, we did not hesitate. We
packed up our belongings, left our home in Ontario, and took on one of
life's most enjoyable yet challenging pastimes -- running a B&B
full-time.”
Derek, who has run a successful high-tech software communications
company for over 30 years, can now grab his fly rod and head out for
some high-quality salmon fishing nearby. "The fishing on and around
the Island is fantastic. I've traveled around the world, but have
always considered the fishing here to be the most exciting and
accessible. Hooking into a coho or pink salmon on a light-weight fly
rod is something that can't be beat." Derek also enjoys rowing,
canoeing, and flying all sizes of model airplanes and helicopters. He
is involved with several local hobby organizations.
Egle Vair speaks several languages, and is a certified French teacher.
She has prior experience in the B&B field, offering comfortable
accommodations at her country farmhouse in Creemore, Ontario. Egle has
enjoyed success in real estate investing, has owned and managed
residential rental units, and has raised three children. "We've always
put family first. When we sent our third child off to university, we
decided it was time to relocate to the Island. We've always viewed it
as the perfect place to live, work, and enjoy life."
Derek and Egle have always found the interaction with guests to be an
uplifting experience. "Getting to know interesting people makes every
day a joy of discovery, and introducing people to the beauty of the
Island is extremely satisfying. Life is short, and we want to help our
guests enjoy it!"
