April 11 - Wish I were really Sybil

All my life, I've had difficulty with my name.  While Egle is an old pagan name in Lithuanian, it has been no end of trouble for me in the real world, particularly as an Innkeeper.  The richness of the folk tale behind it (how, Egle, a country maid, was kidnapped by the King of the Sea Serpents and forced to be his wife) is not something one gets into with each and every guest, so I just tell them about the day I received my nickname.  I was working in New Westminster as an Office Manager for the Douglas College Student Society when I met a formidable lady over luch one day.  She boomed out "And what is your name, dearie?"  I squeaked out, "Oh, my name is Egle Vair". "What!!" she retorted. "Wiggly Bear???!!"  After that, it was not uncommon on campus, to hear "Hey, Wiggly! Coming for coffee?".  Were I Sybil, I would have no such issues, but hey, I guess I'll take Wiggly over Iggy, any day....
